Depression and faith: shared from the heart

Through the writings of David, God offers us this encouragement: I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD (Psalms 40:1-3). When we call out to Him while in our deepest depression, He will lift us out of it and change our entire attitude. There have been times that as I am praying and asking for Him to deliver me from depression, I will remember a hymn, praise chorus, or other song of the faith and the next thing I know, I am singing that song!

Within the book of Jeremiah, God gives another promise for those of us who suffer from depression: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.  Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:11-13). It is comforting to know that God has a plan for each of us and He has promised to listen to us when we call upon Him – even from the depths of depression, He will hear our call! While there are many other passages of scripture I find comfort in, I will share this last one: For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).

For those of us who suffer from depression, we must diligently seek after the Lord, especially when we battle depression. Depression can rob us of our joy of life, our joy of the Lord, and even the joy of our family and closest friends. Again, I’ve shared this with you because this is how I have found comfort and stability; this is how I have chosen to fight my depression. If you also suffer from depression, you don’t have to do it alone – talk to your pastor or regular family doctor – and take it to the Lord.
