What are you offering on your family altar?

VineyardCurvedBrown_fThis week we gather around our tables with family and close friends and as a nation to give our thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed on us as a nation.  I often think back to the stories of the Old Testament where the patriarchs were instructed to build an altar, to offer a sacrifice and praise to God for his mercy and deliverance.  In fact, we find this concept of building altars and offering beginning with the children of Adam and Eve and continuing throughout the Old Testament through the stories about Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and even the prophets, we see the concept of building an altar and offering sacrifices, praises and thanksgiving to God.

Back when I was living in Louisiana, I was listening to a local AM station dedicated to Christian programming.  I remember two shows that I enjoyed listening to, one by Lester Roloff and the other by J. Vernon McGee, actually had spent considerable time talking about the importance of the family altar.  It was a concept that I found interesting but never put much thought to until a few months ago – and then I realized the importance of such a simple concept.  As Christians, the sacrifice for sins has already been done – so this altar has a different purpose.  In the book of Joshua, God introduces the concept of this second type of altar to the children of Israel: Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD. Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you (Joshua 22:26-28).

This altar was not ever to have a burnt offering laid upon it, nor was blood ever to be poured out for a sin offering.  It was to be a memorial – a place of reflection to serve as a reminder of a promise between two people – those children of Israel that remained on the eastern side of Jordan and those that would cross the river into the promised land.  The altar had a second purpose as well – to remind all that would come to look upon it that they were called to serve God.  It would become a place of prayer, a place of spiritual renewal, and even a place to simply seek his presence.  It would also become a place of praise – a sacrifice that I know in my life I have not readily given God the praise that He deserves. Twice in the Bible we are taught that God does see our praise as a type of sacrifice – The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD (Jeremiah 33:11) and By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name (Hebrews 13:15).

Earlier this year, as I was thinking about the spiritual need for a personal altar, I began thinking of the things I had noticed in my travels. In Louisiana, some of my Roman Catholic friends had a place inside their house where they would display their Crucifix, maybe a Bible, and family photos that was their family altar.  While I was in the Army and again, while living in Carbondale, Illinois, my Jewish friends had a spot in their house where a copy of the Torah, Sabbath menorah, and other items were placed on a fireplace mantle or a small table that served as their family altar.  When I was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, one of the church families that often invited soldiers to their house had an area set up, a simple concrete bench with a Bible verse inscribed on it under a tree, that served as their altar.  In each case, these families set aside an area of their home to worship and fellowship with God.  It was an intentional act done out of a sincere desire to be obedient and mindful of God and His gracious blessings.

The radical Christian discipleship contained within our hymns

Every Christian denomination has them and if you are like me, you might even collect them.  Within any church, the church hymnal plays an important part of the New Testament Christian worship service.  In Paul’s letter to the church to the Ephesians he encourages Christians to allow songs of worship and praise to fill their hearts: Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19) and to the church at Colossi, he wrote Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16). The singing of songs that honor God not only is accepted as a sacrifice by God, By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name (Hebrews 13:15) but is seen as something that truly does make a difference in our daily walk with God.

Since becoming active in my Christian faith back some twenty years ago, I never really paid much attention to the words of the congregational songs sung during the worship and praise parts of the service.  I would simply stand, turn to the hymn that the song leader directed us to, and simply sang along – virtually the same thing that many of us do while listening to the radio.  It wasn’t until 2006 that I began to really begin to pay attention to my walk with God that it dawned on me how radical a message is contained within any hymnal.  A common song to every denomination, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, it has a simple tune, is fairly short, but contains a message as powerful as any sermon:

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gains I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God; all the vain things that charm me most – I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from his head, his hands and feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down; did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Every time I sing this song it now feels more like a heartfelt prayer than actually singing a song.  Even if I had all the world could offer me and if I did desire to give it all to the Lord, it still would never be enough of a sacrifice to repay the love that the Lord Jesus Christ showed to me on that old cross on Golgotha nearly two thousand years ago. This hymn is rich in imagery and portrays the cost of my salvation – the cruelest means of death that man had yet devised – as the means to purchase our redemption.  The price that brought us true freedom is far more valuable than anything that we could possibly place any sort of value on here in this world that is tainted by sin.

The foolishness of the Cross

Cross-EasterWith another semester about to start in about ten days, I am already receiving emails from future students wanting to know everything from what books they will need, various assignments that I will require, and even what my policy on absences is.  This morning, while reading through the first of many emails I will receive before next Thursday’s start of classes, I stumbled upon an email that I had not expected nor have I ever had one like this before.  Although I cannot identify its sender because of the privacy policy of the community college I work for, I can share the text of the email (I did not alter any of the original text but did replace names†):

I took your class because I heard you believe in the “Jesus thing” from my friends that’s had you’re classes.  I am a Christian and it’s hard when so many of my teachers don’t believe in Jesus or act like it’s not all true.  They are rude, critical of students that believe, and I’ve been told by Mrs. Libby† that only babies and people with low IQs believe in fairy tales.  I’m excited to be in you’re class and am praying for you.

Never before have I ever had a student email tell me that they are taking my class for the reason that I am a Christian.  Normally, by the second week of class I will have anywhere from two to three students that will come and ask me why I am so different than other instructors they have had or even inquire why I am more “open” to discussions with students than others.  I always find it interesting that Christians, who have an unfair reputation on America’s college campuses as being prudish, uncompromising, and disrespectful of other’s differences are normally the ones that students identify as the most compassionate, student-friendly, or open to discussions with the student.  Where humanism compels and demands compliance with its system, true biblical Christianity simply calls out of love, I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live (Deuteronomy 30:19b)

The email this morning also reveals another reason why I continue to teach within the secular university and college system. Too many of our nation’s college and university faculty are very critical of those who are true believers of the Lord Jesus Christ.  While working on my undergraduate degree, I had a biology professor tell me that I was too smart to believe in the “fairy tales” of a virgin birth, of a resurrected God-man, and that I would go far if I would just accept that science has all the answers.  Still, to this day, when I think about that conversation, I think of the writing of the apostle Paul, For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God (I Corinthians 1:18).
