A biblical study of anger: unjustified anger

bibleIn March of this year, I was offered the opportunity to teach a Sunday school class for young Christians, men and women, who have recently accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Since beginning the class, I have had but one goal: to teach young in the faith Christians about their new faith and how to use the Bible as a guide for daily living. Since August of 2006, when I rededicated my life to the Lord, I became determined not to repeat the mistakes of my past and to seek out His guidance through the studying of the Bible, through prayer, and the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Basic discipleship became not only something that I had to go through, but something that spoke to my heart. There is so much more to this faith we call Christianity than I ever realized. Our salvation is not the end of a journey, but the beginning!

About a month ago, I was preparing a Bible study on anger for my Sunday school class. After all, we all experience it. We all know about it. As I began my study I realized how much about anger, especially from God’s point of view, that I didn’t know or fully understand.  What I began to understand is that in the Lord’s eyes, there are only two types of anger: unjustified anger and justified anger. Unjustified anger, the most common, is also the most dangerous. It can lead us unwittingly into temptation and into sin, it can cause us to act out of character, and even cause us to hurt those around us that we would never consider harming otherwise. It is for these reasons that the Bible has three warnings about anger: Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9), Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord (Romans 12:19), and But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire (Matthew 5:22).

Unjustified anger has at its roots our flesh. Whether it is our best-made plans that fail to materialize, someone does something that hurts our pride, or simply just does something that we feel has wronged us, normally at the root is our fleshly nature. We’ve become embarrassed that we have been exposed not to be the person we want others to perceive us to be, but the way we actually are. In any case, this anger is firmly connected to our old fleshly nature and is the most dangerous. The apostle Paul, as led by the Holy Spirit, wrote Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21). Unjustified anger, if we gave it the chance, will lead us to hatred, anger, and other sins. Make no mistake about it, unjustified anger is a work of the flesh.

Solomon, considered as one of the greatest and wisest kings of the Old Testament, wrote A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame (Proverbs 12:16). If we are honest with ourselves, we have seen others get mad over things that should have embarrassed them. In fact, if we are totally honest, we may have had that experience ourselves. Instead of taking the opportunity to repent of our sin and allowing God to get the glory, we make matters worse and bring more attention to what we perceive as our flaw. It’s a fleshly attitude that even Christians have and often struggle with. Most of the time, when something is made known about us, instead of feeling angry about it, we should repent of it and ask God for forgiveness instead of getting mad because of the situation our own sin and short-sightedness caused us.

Solomon also wrote He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly (Proverbs 14:29). When we take the time to ask ourselves the basic questions about our anger, we normally will see our anger for what it is – a reaction from the flesh. The reaction is often fast and most of the time we do not even stop to think about our actions. When we are slow to act upon our anger, it gives us a chance think about what we are truly angry and why. When we feel ourselves reacting out of anger to something done to us, we need to immediately ask ourselves questions and be completely honest with ourselves and the Lord with our answers:

  • What is the real reason for my anger?
  • What good does it do for me to be angry? How far am I willing to take my anger?
  • Why am I angry at _________? Is it because they really wronged me or because they embarrassed me?
  • What good would getting even with _______ accomplish? Why do I feel the need to make them hurt or suffer?

Solomon’s discourse on anger did not end with Proverbs 14:29, but is continued as he wrote  A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both (Proverbs 27:3). When we succumb to the flesh and allow unjustified anger to control us, it will develop into wrath. Wrath is uncontrolled rage that seeks to be played out. Sometimes, our wrath will consume our imaginations as we begin to imagine ways of hurting the target of our wrath, even if it is someone we love and respect. What Solomon is probably referring to is that our unjustified anger and wrath becomes so much the focus that if we are not careful, it can become as heavy as sand or stones and just as hard to handle. It is easy to strike out at someone in our wrath and anger if we do not learn how to control it. Our wrath and anger become all-consuming to the extent we cannot enjoy any part of our life until our taste for wrath has been played out.

Solomon added to the warnings about anger when he wrote, Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9). Once something is done or said out of our anger or wrath, the consequences for what we have done may be profound. The saying “sticks and stones may break my bones…” is cute, but definitely not true. Words and deeds can hurt, and when they are said and done in anger, they cannot be taken back. They cannot be undone, and are often difficult to overcome.

Powerless churches, weak Christians, and dangerous currents

 Water_safety_sign_Dangerous_currentOver the past year, for financial reasons and out of frustration over the increasing indecency and immorality of television programing, we made the decision to end our cable television subscription. Since then, I have found that I have more time to do the things I enjoy doing and I am less distracted when I do the things that I need to do. One of the things I enjoy is reading, and lately, as a means of improving my Bible studies, I have been reading some of the older literature of the faith – much of it written from the 18th through early 20th Century – the writings of Charles Spurgeon, D. L. Moody, Andrew Bonar, R. A. Torrey, and Emery Bancroft.

One of the things that I have noticed about their writings that has had a profound impact on my way of thinking is the condition of the church and the fundamental understandings that many people have about the Christian faith. Over the past years, I have had several conversations where others (and myself) have lamented that our faith simply does not feel as strong as it should, how the church almost seems powerless within our communities, and how families are falling apart. This morning, while reading my morning devotional, a constant theme kept running through it:  And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not (Leviticus 10:1), And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD (Numbers 26:61), and, Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein (Hebrews 13:9).

As many of my readers know, I was not brought up in a Christian household nor did my family regularly attend church. I did not become active in my faith until 2006 when I decided to become serious about my faith. Before then, I was content to let social contexts define my faith and because of that stand, I did not live the sort of life that God has called us to live: Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy (I Peter 1:16). I know now that many out there have the same struggle I had – God seems distant, your faith is weak, and often it seems that temptation and sin overcome you. You go to church seeking answers but instead, all you get is confusion. One of the things that I have noticed since my reading of the old church leaders I mentioned above is that the church, to be seen as relevant in modern society, has adopted teachings and viewpoints that no longer bear the weight of scripture, but are tainted by the teachings and viewpoints of the lost world as a way to be seen as being compassionate, relevant, and even updated to fit modern times. It is for this very reason that churches are struggling, the family is falling apart, and Christians are weak. Strange fire is being offered from the pulpits across the nation and many are being led to adopt strange and diverse doctrines that the apostle Paul warns about. It is hard to keep the place of relevance that God has called the church to hold when the church has forsaken His never-changing teachings and doctrines.

The church and the modern Christian have mostly ignored the “dangerous current” signs placed all through the scriptures and has continued to adopt ideas that should be foreign. Yesterday, while on the community college campus, I saw a bumper sticker that read, “I’m Christian and support abortion”.  This is exactly the mindset that I am referring to. All through the scriptures, we see that God deems all human life as important, and even declared to the prophet Jeremiah, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations (Jeremiah 1:5). I honestly believe that God knows each of us before we are born and has a plan for each of us, providing that we make the choice to follow His will for us. Even the apostle Paul wrote, But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace (Galatians 1:15) which solidifies the concept that God There are 67 other verses in the Bible where God discusses life in the womb, yet man, in our wisdom, has proclaimed that abortion is a “woman’s right” as we collectively thumb our nose at God. If God has declared that life begins in the womb then we know that God would consider abortion – man ending that life in the womb – as immoral. In fact, the Old Testament considers it just that: If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life (Exodus 21:22-23). Whether it is out of fear of losing members of the congregation or crossing the imaginary line between politics and religion, many of our nation’s pastors and religious leaders are afraid to preach against the evils of abortion. There should be no great surprise when we read that one CNN poll reported that nearly 56% of Americans who identify themselves as Christians do not see any conflict between their faith and abortion. Again, God’s teachings have not changed, yet the church is swimming in dangerous currents.

Grace or the Law? God’s plan has always been grace

torahSince Wednesday of last week, there has been a constant theme that has run through my personal devotions, Sunday school, and a couple of Facebook messenger conversations – the wonder of God’s grace. Let me begin this devotional by saying that I have matured a lot in my walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, but I have a long way to go. There are areas where I still need to grow and I have faith in the abilities of God that He will craft me and mold me into the man who He has called me to be.  While I am not a perfect man, I am not the man who I was even five years ago. When I was at a marketing training seminar for a non-profit organization, one of the speakers made a profound statement that has a spiritual application: if you’re not growing, you’re in the process of dying.

The Law brings about death; even the apostle Paul warned about weight of the Law that so many people seek to put themselves and others in: The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law (I Corinthians 15:56) and if that was not a strong enough, the apostle James wrote, For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10).  So, even if one could keep the Law without offending even the finest points of it, Paul also wrote Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace (Galatians 5:4). What Paul is saying is that if we try to live according to the Law we are actually choosing to be judged according to the Law and not salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Again, looking to the writings and teachings of Paul, Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Romans). Paul even reiterated this in a letter to the early Christians at Galatia: Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified (Galatians 2:16).

During a conversation last week, the topic came up about obedience and salvation; the person I was talking with actually claimed that he did not believe that someone can be saved if they are not tithing, as tithing is required in both the Old and New Testaments.  While I do believe that the giving of tithes and offering are an important part of our obedience to the Lord, I always get a little angry when the focus is placed on the tithe, being 1/10th of a Christian’s income and not on where God places the emphasis – out of the proper “heartset” of humbleness, joy, and willingly giving to the Lord.  From the second book of the Old Testament, God’s desire is our giving be out of a willing heart than out of feeling duty-bound: Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver, and brass (Exodus 35:5). Paul wrote along similar lines to the early Christians at the church in Corinth: Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver (II Corinthians 9:7). God’s plan has never changed, it is not the amount that is placed in the offering plate but it is the attitude that’s in the believer’s heart that actually matters to the Lord. 

God places the importance on the attitude of the giver and not on the size of the tithes and offerings.  Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the prophet Micah wrote: Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah 6:6-8). Our obedience out of a willing and eager heart is what God truly desires.  King Saul, in all his strength, power, and understanding had to learn this lesson the hard way.  After being told to utterly destroy the Amalekites and not to take any prisoners or spoils, Saul captured their king and brought back tremendous wealth and justified his actions by telling Samuel that he was going to offer all the spoils to the Lord. And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offering and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams (I Samuel 15:22). The Lord would rather have our obedience out of a willing and cheerful heart than to offer anything based on disobedience or from a heart whose giving is only from adherence to the letter of the Law.

Within the life and earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus there is a story recorded in the gospel of Luke that illustrates this teaching clearly.  As Jesus was at the doors of the temple in Jerusalem teaching those who had come to listen, he saw a group of men placing their tithes and offerings into the temple’s treasury. As they passed by, an old widow came in and placed two mites, basically two Roman pennies, into the  same area where the men had just tossed their offerings.  Luke records: And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had (Luke 21:1-4). Now the Bible does not tell us if they were Pharisees or Scribes, but it does shed light on the woman’s gift.  It was not the amount of money she placed in the treasury that caused her to become a part of the Bible’s narrative, but the condition of her heart as she placed two pennies into the temple treasury.  She gave out of a willing heart that simply wanted to honor the Lord.  The men that were before her probably gave their tithe of 1/10th of their increase and probably gave above that (which is considered an offering), but they gave out of their abundance and out of an adherence to the Law and not out of their faith or love for the Lord. It was by the grace of God alone that her giving was seen as being of more spiritual value than the financial value of the giving of the men before her. 

It really is that simple as the old woman found out; want to see the grace of God in your life?  Want to see Him honor what you’re able to do for and give Him? Then whatever it is that you do or give, make sure your heart is doing it for the right reason. God would rather have you give and do willingly and out of love than to have you to do anything because you feel its required.
